Mulching: Giving Your Garden a Winter Coat

Oct 25, 2024 - reading time 3 min.

Now that all the leaves are falling from the trees and you may be busy with the broom, let's talk about mulching! Mulching may sound like a fancy gardening term, but really it just means putting a layer of organic material (such as leaves, grass or wood chips) over the soil of your garden. It's like putting a nice warm winter coat on your garden! This natural blanket protects and nourishes your soil and makes maintenance a lot easier.

Why should you mulch? Here are the benefits, in a nutshell:

  • Free soil nutrition: microbes and worms feast on the mulch and slowly break it down. This feeds the soil, and you don't have to use manure as often. Win-win!
  • Bye, bye weeds: mulch blocks the sunlight that weeds need to grow. So less weeding, more enjoyment.
  • Waste? Well no: by using garden waste, such as leaves and grass, as mulch, you give it a second life. No more junk, but food for your garden.
  • Saving water: a layer of mulch retains moisture in the soil, reducing the need to water during the dry months. This is not only convenient, but also better for the environment - a perfect choice for a sustainable and ecological garden.

How do you do that mulching?

Simple! Sprinkle a layer of about 5 to 10 cm of organic material around your plants and shrubs, but do give the trunk of trees and shrubs some breathing room. And in terms of materials? These are good options:

  • Leaves and grass: Perfect for the warmer months - quick and easy!
  • Wood chips: Durable and beautiful around trees and shrubs.
  • Compost: The all-rounder, full of nutrients and ideal for any type of soil.

So grab those old leaves or wood chips and give your garden a nice warm coat. With a little mulch, you'll make for happy soil, happy plants and a garden where you have less work to do yourself.

Mulching in your ecological garden design

As a garden designer in Amsterdam, Waterland and surrounding areas, I almost always apply mulching in my designs. It contributes to healthy soil, promotes biodiversity and makes your garden more sustainable. It closes the waste cycle in your garden. So mulching is not only practical, but also an essential part of an ecological garden design that fits the natural environment.
